In today's fast-paced world, finding solace and healing through artistic expression has become increasingly crucial. Recognizing the therapeutic power of art, the Mesa Arts Center launched the Arts in Service program, offering free arts therapy to active and retired military service members. Pixel Thick had the honor of collaborating with the Mesa Arts Center to film the transformative impact of the program. In this series, we aimed to highlight stories from each of the incredible classes offered through the Arts in Service program and showcase the impact of the program overall.
Welding: Creating Strength Through Fusion
As we captured the welding class, we witnessed veterans using metal as their canvas to craft unique pieces. Through this process, they discovered not only the artistry in welding but also the power of getting lost in the process. Veterans found solace in the rhythmic and precise nature of the craft, instilling them with a renewed sense of purpose and strength.
Blacksmithing: Forging Bonds and Memories
Pixel Thick's camera documented the blacksmithing class, where veterans shaped metal with precision and creativity. We witnessed the emotional depth and camaraderie that developed as participants learned the ancient art of blacksmithing.
Casting: Sculpting New Beginnings
We filmed the power of transforming molten metal into tangible art in the Arts in Service casting class. The video showcases veterans pouring their emotions into their creations, molding and shaping their experiences in cathartic ways to create gifts for friends and family members.
Painting: A Portrait of Healing
In this video, we highlight the therapeutic journey of veterans as they experience emotions and confidence they didn’t know were possible. The video showcases the participants' creative process, the revelations they experienced and through the power of visual storytelling, Pixel Thick is able to effectively convey the impact of painting as a vehicle for self-expression and healing.
Lapidary: Unveiling Hidden Gems
Pixel Thick's expertise in videography brought the lapidary class to life, capturing the delicate art of cutting and polishing gemstones. The videos showcases veterans delicately working with precious stones, unearthing hidden beauty while simultaneously symbolizing their own personal transformations.
Printmaking: Making a Lasting Impression
We were excited to document the printmaking class, allowing viewers to witness the intricate process of creating unique prints. Through our lens, we were able to highlight the veterans' exploration of different techniques and the joy they experienced through their artwork.
Flameworking: Shaping Glass and Perspectives
Through classes in flameworking, veterans are given a creative outlet to process their experiences, heal, and rediscover their sense of purpose. These free classes provided by the Arts in Service program, documented and supported by the dedicated team at Pixel Thick, empower veterans to reclaim their narratives, find solace, and connect with their inner selves.
