Ceiling Hooks For A Production Van

Ceiling Hooks For Production Van

If floor space is a rare commodity in your production vehicle like us, read on. It’s been a long time coming but we have finally installed some overhead equipment hooks in our Ram Promaster production van. These square ceiling hooks turned out perfect for our 6’x6’ scrim frame. Previously, we’d have to slide the frame in from the back doors down the center after the carts were loaded. Likewise, we’d need to pull them out if even partially to get the first cart out. We have the shortest wheelbase model Promaster (118”) so even with the frame up against the back doors, it’s still in the way of offloading. Now that the frame is off the floor, it’s out of the way and one less thing to think about.

To install these overhead storage hooks, I took advantage of some openings in the van’s structural ribs. I started by using the hooks as a template to mark my holes on 2 2”x6” pieces of 1” plywood. After drilling the holes, I utilized 2 toggle bolts to sandwich the plywood up against the flange of the opening for each hook. I utilized 2 3/16ths toggle bolts per hook, 2” long. This keeps the installation non-destructive and relocatable if I ever want to change things up.

To keep the frame from bouncing out, we’ll be using Bongo Ties. Coated wire is also a great solution. We’re currently using one side of the hooks for our scrim frame, but are working on figuring out how to securely hold dolly pipe on the other side.  If you have any ideas, let us know!

One last thing to point out is that the steel equipment hooks have a tough rubber coating. It helps prevent rattle noise, which I always appreciate. If you’re looking to hang up scrim frames, cables, or any other piece of equipment, consider giving these overhead hooks a try!
